Election watchdog to monitor Sri Lanka LG elections

People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), an election watchdog in Sri Lanka says it is making arrangements to monitor the upcoming local government election.


According to the Executive Director of the PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi the monitoring will be carried out at three stages, pre-election period, on election day and after the elections.

Meanwhile accepting nomination for the local government elections ended at 12 noon today. Under the election regulations the Election Secretariat will accept objections to the nominations from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Election Commissioner will announce the date of polls immediately after accepting the nominations by returning officers of the 25 districts.

The government dissolved 301 out of 343 local government bodies on January 6th and elections are to be held in mid-March.
