Several cracks in the earth have opened up yesterday and this morning in the coastal area of Trincomalee in Eastern Sri Lanka.

Several meters long earth cracks have appeared in the vicinity of the Thalpayar lagoon in Kuchchaveli, Trincomalee, local media reported.

Experts from Geological Survey and Mines Bureau and the National Building Research Institute (NBRI) have also visited the area today to assist in the scientific investigations.

Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili has said that field officers are conducting relevant experiments to determine the reason for these cracks, although it is suspected be normal behavior due to the layer of clay in the ground, state-run ITN reported.

Security Forces and Trincomalee District Secretariat are closely monitoring the situation. Authorities say no damages have been occurred due to the cracks.

Director of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau Athula Muthungkotuwa has told the state-run radio SLBC said that further investigations will be carried out tomorrow as well.
