600 independent groups to contest local government elections of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Election Secretariat says that 600 independent groups have submitted deposits to file nomination lists for the local government elections.

The period, given by the Election Secretariat for submitting deposits, ended at 12 noon today.

The Election Secretariat received the highest number to submit deposits from 115 independent groups contesting for local institutions in Digamadulla district.

The second highest number of deposits is for Kalutara district. Seventy-two independent groups expect to contest for the local government bodies in Kalutara district.

The period given for the filing nominations for the local government elections end at 12 noon tomorrow.

The elections are to be held in mid-March for 301 local government bodies.
