Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today said that neither United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon nor any other international organization had the right to interfere in the country's internal issues.
JVP Propaganda Secretary and parliamentarian Vijitha Herath told a press conference that the UN Secretary-General's Panel of Experts should not be permitted to enter the country. Herath said the JVP condemned the UN Panel's move to visit the country.
The UN Panel has said it wanted to visit the country to meet with the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) appointed by the Sri Lankan President to probe the events took place during the last seven years of the war.
Human rights groups and Western nations including the United States and Britain have been pressuring the United Nations to investigate the human right violations and alleged war crimes during the last stages of Sri Lanka's war against Tamil Tiger rebels last year.
According to Hearth, the government's decision to permit the Panel to visit Sri Lanka showed the double standards of the government.
The Sri Lankan government earlier said the UN Panel is unwarranted as Sri Lanka has launched its own mechanism to investigate the allegations. The panel members, who started their work on the probe on September 16, will not be allowed to enter the country for any investigations, the government said in June.
Herath also spoke of the cost of living at the press conference. He said that while the festive season has begun, prices of essential commodities have seen a massive increase in a manner that has never been witnessed earlier.
"The price of a coconut that was Rs.12.00 when the present President was elected has increased to Rs.60 at present. Hence people, instead of buying a whole coconut, have to buy half a coconut. When compared with the prices of goods in 2005, the prices of the same commodities have seen a massive increase," Herath said.
