Sri Lankan government releases 100 rehabilitated LTTE cadres

Sri Lankan authorities Saturday handed over another 100 rehabilitated Tamil Tiger rebels to their parents and relatives in celebration of the Christmas.

The handing over ceremony took place at the Vavuniya Cultural Center under the patronage of Minister of Human Resources DEW Gunasekara and Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera.

The authorities presented the released former rebels with certificates according to their completed courses during their rehabilitation.

Minister Gajadeera addressing the gathering said most of the detained cadres will be released following their rehabilitation and only around 5,000 are left now from the 11,000 cadres detained at the end of the war in May 2009.

The hardcore LTTE cadres who have committed serious crimes will be charged in the Courts, the Minister said.

The Colombo Additional Magistrate last week ordered to remand 160 hardcore cadres who were in the custody of Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) following their arrest from camps.

At today's ceremony at the Cultural Centre in Vavuniya, the rehabilitated LTTE cadres presented a Christmas Carol service.

One of the released cadres today has received the opportunity to pursue his studies at the Jaffna University and another has received a teaching appointment in a government school.

The Minister asked the released cadres to use the skill they learnt to be productive citizens and participate in the democratic process.
