Sri Lanka Army spokesman Major General Ubhaya Medawala says that the Army will re-enlist the Army deserters based on their conduct while in service and after deserting.
Army sources say that there are around 50,000 Army deserters in the country. Army offered several amnesties to these deserters to surrender and de-list. However, the remaining 50,000 have not made use of the amnesties.
Major General Medawala said that the Army would investigate the conduct of the deserters once they were arrested and consider re-enlisting them based on the reports.
Investigations on several recent hard crimes revealed that Army deserters were involved in them. The Army and police have been alerted about the trend and measures are underway to arrest the deserters.
