Sports medical units in Sri Lanka hospitals

Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health plans to establish sports medical units in every major hospital in the country, the Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has said.

At a function to present certificates and cash awards to medal winners of the National Sports Festival representing the North Central Province in Polonnaruwa, Minister Sirisena has said that in the past he had received complaints that there were no separate medical units for sports doctors in government hospitals.

The Minister plans to provide a Sports Medical Unit to every base hospital in the country.

Meanwhile, media reports said that the Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has taken measures to begin testing all Sri Lankan athletes, who are participating in international sports, for banned substances.

The only gold medalist from Sri Lanka, boxer Manju Wanniarachchi, 30, at the recent Commonwealth Games held in India found to be positive for the performance enhancing drug nandrolone.

He is likely to face a two-year ban and lose his medal after his second urine sample also tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid.
