The scheduled launching of the Closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance camera system for today in Sri Lankan capital Colombo has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances, police said.
According to the police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody the launching has been rescheduled for December 29.
The government has set up CCTV surveillance cameras in major cities to enhance the security and combat crime. A network of 108 cameras has been set up at vantage points in the Colombo city.
Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had proposed the installation of security surveillance cameras in the cities a year ago but it was being delayed due to heavy cost of the technology.
In May this year, a team led by the head of the project, Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne, underwent a week-long training programme in Singapore on the usage of the CCTV system.
