In a span of half an hour, City Crime Branch police on Saturday shot dead two criminals in separate encounters - Shankar wanted in the gang rape of a woman from Jharkhand and Pedda Gunda, a rowdy-sheeter who escaped from custody.
While Shankar (30) from Dankinikot in Tamil Nadu, led a four-member gang which gang-raped a woman on Sunday night in Electronics City, Pedda Gunda (32) of Kamalanagar faces charges in 14 cases.
Shankar The Rapist
After a hot pursuit for five days, police managed to track Shankar. Around 4.45am, the CCB team raided a house near Bagalur. Shankar and his associate had left the place and police intercepted them near Reva College. Shankar tried to attack sub-inspector Sirajuddin with a chopper. Two inspectors - Ashokan and Bale Gowda - opened fire at Shankar, killing him on the spot. Sirajuddin and Shankar were rushed to hospital. In the melee, Shankar's associate managed to flee on a motorcycle.
Shankar was a prime suspect in the rape case which shocked the city. A 26-year-old woman from Jharkhand walking to her sister's house in Pragatinagar, Electronics City, was kidnapped by a five-member gang. Police showed her photos of many persons with criminal records. She identified Shankar and two others and also remembered the number of the car used for the kidnapping.
On Wednesday night, an inspector spotted the car near Electronics City and chased it. The car broke down and the inspector managed to grab Shekhar, who had dropped the woman back. Shekhar revealed the gang's hideout. Police learnt that Shekhar and another of the gang members did not have criminal records.
Joint commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar said Shankar hailed from Tamil Nadu and was involved in a murder at Roykot. He had cases of robbery, dacoity and assault registered in Roykot, Hosur, Athibele, Electronics City and Dobbspet too.
S hekhar told police he had joined the gang recently and this was not the first time that they had kidnapped girls and raped them.
He said they had done this at least seven times after he joined the gang - in places like Attibele, Hosur and Electronics City. In all cases, he'd drop the girls on his motorcycle.
Two other members of his gang were also involved in robbery and dacoity cases. There were no criminal cases registered against Chandru, the fifth member of this gang. Police are hunting for the other three gang members, he added.
Encounters
The first encounter took place around 4.15am near Peenya in Bangalore North. Alok Kumar said Gunda had escaped from police a fortnight ago. The CCB team raided his house and when he tried escaping on a motorcycle, the police intercepted him.
Gunda opened fire with his revolver and CCB ACP Hadimani returned fire. Head constable Krishnappa was injured and was admitted to a private hospital.
Pedda Gunda was wanted in at least 14 cases. In most cases he was acquitted. "In a double murder case involving Tony and Soory, in which he was acquitted, the complainant was absconding for three years. We tried to locate him and bring him to court. But he refused to give a statement,'' Alok Kumar added.
Pedda Gunda is a resident of Kamalanagar. He is married and has two children. Because of his criminal activities, his children could not be admitted to school, police said.
