Sri Lanka Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) says that the chicken imported from India is not suitable for consumption since a quality assessment has not been taken.
GMOA Chairman Gishantha Dissanayake said that the consumption of these chicken stocks might cause health problems.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Department of Animal Products and Health Dr. Nimal Chandrasiri told media that the imported chicken and eggs would be released to market only following testing the quality of them by the Medical Research Institute and the Animal Quarantine Unit.
The government has planned to import 500 metric tons of chicken and five million eggs. Of the order, 125 metric tons of chicken and two million eggs have now arrived in Colombo harbor, Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade sources said.
The government has planned to sell these stocks at cooperative and Lak Sathosa department stores at cheaper prices.
