He says the government has paved the way for the intellectuals in the country to thrive forward with their aspirations and the university network in the country should be made the research centers of Sri Lanka's future development.
President Rajapaksa made these observations today at a ceremony to open a new swimming pool complex in the Sri Jayewardenepura University premises that was constructed at a cost of 85 million rupees.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has told the students that his aspiration is to see them becoming internationally qualified intellectuals rather than being mere indigenous scholars.
The swimming pool was a result of a request made by the chairman of Tharunayata Hetak Organization, parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa. The D.A. Rajapaksa Memorial Education and Cultural Fund granted funds for the project.
The 10-lane, 50-meter pool is expected to be used for the swimming events of Commonwealth Games Sri Lanka is bidding to host.
Participating at the ceremony Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake has said that the government has allocated 240,000 rupees in the next budget as annual expenses for each university student.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena, Parliamentarians Namal Rajapaksa, Luxman Wasantha Perera, and Vice Chancellor Dr. N.L.A. Karunarathne were also present at the occasion.
