New cardinal Dr. Malcolm Ranjith of Sri Lanka concelebrated Mass with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI and 23 other new cardinals this morning in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.
The Pope placed the ring that symbolizes the new cardinal's sacred bond to the church on the right hand of the former Archbishop of Colombo.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith received his red biretta from Pope Benedict XVI during the Consistory ceremony in Saint Peter's Basilica Saturday when the Pope installed 24 new Roman Catholic cardinals from around the world.
The Pope Benedict ordained 24 new cardinals on Saturday and 20 of them are under age 80 making them eligible to be his successor to the 1.5 billion-member Roman Catholic Church.
The 63-year-old Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith was born in Polgahawela, Sri Lanka. He is the second cardinal of the Colombo, Sri Lanka archdiocese. The first was Thomas Cooray who was elevated to cardinal in 1965.
