The parliament unanimously selected Weerakkody to the post after Leader of the House, Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva proposed his name and Chief Government Whip, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena seconded it.
The Deputy Speaker post fell vacant as the former Deputy Speaker Priyankara Jayaratne has been appointed as Civil Aviation Minister.
