The Sri Lankan government is aiming to recover the high cost incurred in thermal power generation from the high energy consumers through the proposed tariff revision.
Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka told parliament that instead of resorting to short term solutions, the country's electricity prices needed to be stabilized.
He said the government would introduce an electricity billing formula that would promote renewable energy sources among consumers.
According to the Minister, the Power and Energy Ministry is to introduce a programme to create awareness among consumers on utilizing less electricity while enjoying the same comforts.
Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his budget speech proposed to increase the electricity tariff from January next year by 5% for users exceeding 90 units per month.
