The Sri Lankan government has taken measures to build a water treatment plant to supply pipe borne drinking water to the rural areas of the Eastern Province.
The government has awarded a contract to the Finnish construction and engineering company Outotec Oyj to build the water treatment plant in the Ampara district at a cost of over 70 million Euros, the company announced yesterday.
The Integrated Water Supply Scheme project which is the final phase of a scheme designed to provide treated pipe borne water to over 75% of the Ampara District. Outotec has completed the first and second phases of the project in 1999 and 2002 and the completion of the current phase is expected in November 2013.
Outotec is expected to deliver the design, supply, construction, installation and commissioning of a water treatment plant and related pump stations and equipment, transmission mains and distribution piping as well as associated infrastructure.
The Company says its experience in managing projects across the globe was key in helping source and secure the funding necessary for the final phase of the project and access to clean water will improve the quality of life of some half a million people in the country.
