Sri Lanka's External Affairs Minister, Prof. G.L. Peiris has left for Iran to lead the Sri Lankan delegation at the 9th Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Member States, the External Affairs Ministry announced. The ACD is scheduled to be held in Teheran, Iran from 8 ' 9 November 2010.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressing the participants from the 31 member countries in the opening ceremony of the 9th ACD meeting on Monday called for a new world order for all nations and governments to play equally important roles in world affairs.

"We need a new order which could manage the rights of all nations and people and bring durable peace and security to all nations," Ahmadinejad has said.

Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Manouchehr Mottaki addressing the opening ceremony today said the different regional organizations from west to east of Asia are working actively and comprehensive ACD forum has paved the way for Asian states to discuss different issues.

The 9th ADC meeting is titled, "Towards Asian Convergence and Unification: Promotion of Progress, Peace and Justice."

According to a statement issued by the Sri Lanka External Affairs Ministry the ACD aims to constitute the "missing link in Asia" by incorporating every Asian country and building an Asian Community.

The 9th meeting is expected to explore ways to further consolidate and promote cooperation in Asia towards fortifying Asia's competitiveness and maximizing the diversity and rich resources in Asia, thus leading to economic development in critical areas such as tourism, energy cooperation, and ICT, the statement said.

The ACD, founded by 18 members and currently comprising 31 states, holds ministerial meetings to enable an on-going dialogue between high level policy makers of Asian powers.

The Ministry said on the sidelines of the meeting, Prof. Peiris will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Brunei, Kuwait and Oman.

Sri Lanka hosted the 8th ACD meeting in Colombo in 2009. Sri Lanka chaired the ACD until September 2010 and handed over the Chair to Iran. Kuwait will be the next one to chair the organization and accordingly the 10th ACD meeting will be held in Kuwait.
