Senior Sri Lankan minister says public sector should have been granted a Rs. 2,500 salary increment

A senior Sri Lankan government minister today said the government should have granted a Rs. 2,500 salary increment to the public servants.

Senior Minister for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Tissa Vitharana has told parliament today that the salary increment granted to the public sector in the 2011 budget was disappointing.
He said that the public sector should have at least been granted a Rs. 2,500 increment.
The government in its 2011 budget proposed a 5% allowance and a Rs. 600 cost of living allowance to the public sector employees.
Trade unions meanwhile have called for a salary increase of Rs. 9,000 given the rising cost of living.
