Apparently piqued over a section of Congressmen claiming credit for government welfare projects, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has said these schemes were only meant for welfare of people and could not be differentiated as central or state sponsored.
"When we propose and devise a project, we don''t leave the Centre out of it.. I am not saying we are working alone.. we are working in unison," Karunanidhi said here last evening.
He said DMK, which wanted a separate land for Dravida race, had given it up only because it was convinced by those in power at Delhi that development would be uniform throughout the country.
"We wanted separate schemes for Tamil Nadu, which had suited the land''s economy, when we formed the party. But what was the advice given to us then. We were told that schemes implemented will benefit the entire country, including Tamil Nadu.
"States would not be differentiated in India. We believed in this and that is why Southern parts of the country still remain as part of India," Karunanidhi said.
The concept of national integration and unity of the country should not be confined only to Tamils. Nobody should forget that all those living in the country are Indians, he said, adding, any schemes implemented should be for all Indians.
In an obvious reference to the repeated charges of some state Congressmen that his government was claiming credit for many centrally sponsored schemes, Karunanidhi said some people were attempting to confuse people on the issue.
"I can only tell them to leave us alone", he said without elaborating.
