Joint field exercise by Sri Lanka armed forces to commence today

The three armed forces of Sri Lanka will commence a joint field exercise today, Sri Lanka Army said.

The joint field exercise, a first in Sri Lankan military history will commence today at 3:00 p.m. and will continue for nine days, the Army spokesman Major General Ubhaya Medawala told the media.

A total of over 2,500 troops, drawn from the Army, Navy, and Air Force are slated to take part in the 'Ex-Cormorants Strike'.

The drill is to be conducted in areas spanning from Silawathura in Mannar Dirstict to Mavillu in Thanthirimale in Anuradhapura District.

According to the Army 1,600 Army Commando and Special Forces personnel together with naval ships and Air Force aircraft will take part in the field training exercise.

According to the Army, the exercise is conducted in an amphibious setting with emphasis on specialized ground operations and is to be executed in stages.

It is held under the approval of the Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and under the guidance of the Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.
