Heavy rains likely in coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry in next 24 hours

Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry could be in for some very heavy rainfall, with the meteorological department predicting heavy to very heavy rains over the regions in the next 24 hours, beginning 8.30am today.

"Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and at a few places over interior Tamil Nadu in the next 24 hours", the met office said.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rain would occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 24 hours. Heavy rain would also occur over interior Tamil Nadu during the same period", it said.
Moderate to rather heavy rain would occur at many places over Chennai and in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu and in Puducherry, it said.
Pamban and Rameshwaram each received 9 cm, while Mannargudi and Thiruthuraipoondi both received 7 cm in the last 24 hours, ending 8.30am today, the met office said.
A Madurai report said many ares in the Southern districts including Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruvarur and Pudukottai remained were flooded in incessant rains for the past one week, while crops in hundreds of acres were damaged.
Officials said fishermen did not put out sea in Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai districts due to rough seas. Most of tanks in the districts were full and villages surrounding the lakes were flooded, they said.
They said chilli crop in most areas in Ramanathapuram district were destroyed due to the floods. A rough estimate by the agriculture department said dry crops in 10,000 acres had been destroyed.
Tamil Nadu minister Suba Thangavelan,and Ramanathapuram MP Rithish visited the affected areas and directed officials to accomodated people in wedding halls and provide them food.
A school boy was drowned and washed away by flash floods while crossing a channel through Lower bridge at Tayamangalam.
Meanwhile, the Mullaiperiyar dam level touched 130 feet against its maximum level of 136 feet.Inflow was 1,957 cusecs.
The Vaigai dam level touched 70 feet with an inflow of 2,092cusecs. Discharge from the dam was 2152cusecs.
