The city police have booked 625 people under the Goondas Act in the last 11 months, commissioner of police T Rajendran said on Friday, adding that the figure was the highest in the history of Chennai police. (In Tamil Nadu, video pirates are also booked under the act)
.He said the police had been acting tough on criminals and that in the last 45 days, as many as 38 people were arrested in 33 cases and properties worth Rs 60 lakh and cash of Rs 17.60 lakh recovered from them.
He said that all his subordinates had been asked to speed up the investigation of pending cases. The chargesheet in Keerthivasan kidnap case, he said, would be filed on Monday. City police had booked the two accused in the kidnap case under Goonda Act recently.
Regarding the kidnap of a businessman that took place in the city recently, Rajendran said that the complainant had been telling "a lot of lies." "It is a fact that he had been kidnapped. However, he has been saying a lot of lies regarding the way he escaped. Further investigation in this case is going on," the police commissioner said.
Regarding the complained filed by the BCCI against former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, Rajendran said the central crime branch had asked the BCCI to provide some more documents.
Regarding the continuing efforts to provide more security to school children, the police commissioner said that patrolling around school premises by police personnel before and after school hours have begun and that schools have started installing cameras in their premises. He said the phone numbers of local police inspectors have been given to schools so that they could seek immediate help from the police.
