Sri Lankan refugees return home from India

Sixty seven Sri Lankan Tamil refugees that returned from India have been sent home, says United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

These people returned to Sri Lanka by air yesterday after languishing in refugee camps in South India for months.
The refugees, mostly women and children from Trincomalee district, belonged to 21 families.

They have fled to India in small fishing boats as the war between the state forces and the Tamil Tigers was raging in 2008 and 2009.

Their risky journey had commenced from Thalaimannar of the northwestern coast.

A recent UNHCR report said the security situation has greatly improved in Sri Lanka and refugees who fled the war are returning now. The UNHCR assists the refugees returning by providing them with non-food items at its offices in Vavuniya, Mannar, Jaffna, and Trincomalee.
