Provincial councilors of Sri Lanka's main opposition protest against Fonseka's imprisonment

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) councilors of the Central Provincial Council today attended sessions wearing black arm bands as a mark of protest against the imprisonment of former Army Commander and parliamentarian Sarath Fonseka.

The UNP councilors also staged a walkout in protest of a decision by the Chairman of the Central Provincial Council, Saliya Bandara Dissanayake.
While one provincial council member from the opposition and two from the government party were to be nominated today in order to assist the Deputy Chairman in the absence of the chairman, Dissanayake had asked for another name when the UNP had nominated S. Sathasivam's name.

Dissanayake had said Sathasivam's name could not be accepted as he was wearing a black arm band.

Meanwhile, a UNP Western Provincial Councilor commenced a sathyagraha calling for Fonseka's release.

UNP councilor Srinath Perera commenced the sathyagraha at the Independence Square in Colombo this evening.
