Man Convicted In Tamil Tigers Arms Conspiracy

A man from Singapore has been convicted in federal court in Baltimore of trying to funnel arms to a Sri Lankan terrorist group.

Forty-eight-year-old Balraj Naidu was convicted Monday of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
Federal prosecutors say Naidu was part of a conspiracy to buy weapons for the Tamil Tigers, a group that's been fighting since 1976 for a separate state in Sri Lanka. The State Department designated it as a terrorist organization in 1997.
Prosecutors say Naidu tried to buy $900,000 in weapons from an undercover business in Maryland.
Several coconspirators have already pleaded guilty in the case. Naidu faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
