Sri Lanka parliament to debate External Affairs Minister's no-confidence motion on October 7

Sri Lanka's party leaders in parliament have agreed to take up the no-confidence motion against External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris in the House on October 7.

The no-confidence motion against the Minister was put forward by the United National Party (UNP).
Chief Government Whip and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told the local media that voting on the no-confidence motion is to take place on the same day.
The no-confidence motion was handed over to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa by UNP MPs John Amaratunga, Lakshman Kiriella, and Ravi Karunanayaka.

Minister Peiris meanwhile, accepted the no-confidence motion and called on the Chief Government Whip and the Speaker to take it up for debate urgently.

The UNP has cited the Minister's inaction on retaining the European Union's GSP Plus trade concession as one of the main reasons for handing in the no confidence motion.
