Sri Lanka opposition MP released from remand after eight months

Sri Lanka's major opposition United National Party (UNP) Kalutara district MP Palitha Thevarapperuma was released on bail by Mathugama Magistrate Daminda Ramanayaka when the MP was produced in court today.

The Magistrate granted Rs. 25,000 cash bail following the ruling issued recently by the Court of Appeal to grant bail for the parliamentarian.
The MP was later charged with the use of a mobile phone without permission inside the remand prison and Kalutara Magistrate Namal Perera acquitted him of the charge after severely warning him following a guilty plea.

The MP was elected to the parliament in April while he was in remand prison for possessing illegal fire arms. He was in remand for more than eight months.
