Sri Lanka's sacked deputy minister Mervyn Silva has been reinstated into his former portfolio as the Deputy Minister of Highways, the Presidents Media Unit has announced today.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on August 10 stripped Silva of his ministerial portfolio pending a disciplinary hearing on his action of tying a Samurdhi officer to a tree as a punishment for failing to attend a dengue prevention campaign in Kelaniya area.
Minister's actions sparked island wide protest from Samurdhi officers and brought condemnation from fellow ministers as well as from opposition.
The special disciplinary committee, appointed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to inquire into the action has found the controversial minister not guilty. Hence he has been reinstated into his former position, the government said.
