MAN KILLS COLLEGE GIRL AFTER MARRIAGE OFFER SPURNED

20-year-old computer engineering student was allegedly stabbed to death by her cousin, who was furious that his offer for her hand in marriage had been turned down by her family.
The assailant, Yogesh Bachhav (25), an employee of car major General Motors, stabbed Jyotsna Bagul on a busy road at Chinchwad near here on Friday morning. Bachhav also attacked Jyotsna’s classmate Sadhana Godse (21) before turning the knife on himself. However, he survived the suicide attempt.
In his statement to the police at the hospital, Bachhav said he killed Jyotsna as her family had “tarnished” his image in society by rejecting the marriage proposal. He also said that he did not want to live any more.
Jyotsna’s father, Karbhari Bagul, who rushed to Pune from Nashik, squarely blamed the police for failing to act upon three complaints
Bagul said, “Bachhav is my cousin’s son. Initially, we had accepted his marriage proposal. Later, however, we decided against the match as he did not want Jyotsna to continue with her education after marriage. Bachhav started threatening us after that. We filed three complaints against him at the Chinchwad police station. But the police did nothing.”
Later in the day, Sanjay Sarkale, head constable of the Chinchwad police station, was suspended and inspector Rajendra Sawant (crime) and assistant police inspector Vishwas Jachak, both from the Chinchwad police station, were attached to the police control room pending investigations. Deputy commissioner of police (zone-IV) Sanjay Jadhav told TOI, “We have initiated an inquiry into the allegations levelled by the woman’s father against the Chinchwad police.”
Jyotsna, a resident of Nashik, was living in a hostel at Walhekarwadi in the vicinity. She was a third-year student of D Y Patil College of Engineering at Akurdi. Bachhav, also a resident of Nashik, lives at Kalewadi here. An ITI passout, he works in GM’s maintenance department at Talegaon.
Jyotsna and Sadhana, who is her room-mate as well as classmate, were on their way to college on her Scooty Pep when Bachhav intercepted them on his motorcycle on the busy Gurudwara road at Walhekarwadi. In what seems like a premeditated attack, he pulled out a chopper and a knife from the carrier of his motorcycle and slashed Jyotsna on the neck. When she fell, Bachhav stabbed her in the chest and stomach, killing her on the spot.
Sadhana rushed to help Jyotsna but Bachhav stabbed her in the left thigh with the knife, inflicting a four-inch-deep wound. He then stabbed himself four times in the stomach.
Shock and panic gripped passersby on the road and most of them fled. Many houses in the area have been given out on rent to college students. Sadhana kept crying for help, but nobody came forward to assist her. Finally, Kedar Birajdar, who studies in the same college, took Sadhana to the nearby Paras Polyclinic in a rickshaw.
Jyotsna and Bachhav, who were lying on the road, were taken by the Chinchwad police to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri. Jyotsna was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Bachhav was later shifted to Lokmanya hospital in Nigdi.
Dr Kiran Bhise of Lokmanya hospital told TOI that Bachhav was immediately operated upon because he had suffered heavy internal bleeding. “His condition is stable but critical,” he said.
The police have arrested Bachhav under sections 302 ( murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 309 (attempting suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.
