The Sri Lankan government has taken measures to construct a new 5-storey building for the Siddha medicine Unit of the Jaffna University at a cost of Rs 109.5 million to replace its old building severely damaged during the war.
The Cabinet has approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake in this regard at the yesterday's cabinet meeting.
The traditional Siddha medicine unit has admitted around 70 students for the 2009/2010 academic year and there are already another 120 students in five batches.
The government plans to develop the learning environment of the unit by improving its library, laboratory, pharmacy, and classroom facilities.
The Cabinet has also given its approved for the construction of a 3-storey hostel building at Puliyankulam for 250 female students in the Faculty of Agriculture of Rajarata University at a cost of Rs.154 million.
The construction of two 3-storied hostel complexes at Saliyapura for 400 students (200 girls and 200 boys) in the Faculty of Medical and Allied Sciences of the Rajarata University at a cost of Rs.301 million has also been approved at the yesterday's cabinet meeting. The construction of the complexes, spanning for a two-year period, is to be commenced this year.
