Indian Army Chief arrives in Sri Lanka to boost defence ties

India's Army Chief, General V. K. Singh , arrived in Sri Lanka to a warm welcome on Sunday for a five-day visit in an effort to boost the defence ties between India and Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and his wife received the visiting Army Commander who was accompanied by his wife at the airport. .
General Singh is scheduled to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, and External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris.

The General, who has led the war against LTTE in "Operation Pawan" to capture Jaffna from LTTE in late 1987 as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force, is also scheduled to visit the war-torn North on Tuesday.
Tomorrow, General Singh is to pay tributes to the Indian soldiers killed during the war with the LTTE at the memorial for the IPKF soldiers and officers.
His visit comes in the wake of India's Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao's three-day visit to the island on August 30.
