Sri Lanka's Cabinet of ministers has approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiyutheen to expand the salterns at Mannar in the northwest region of the country.
Nearly 60% of the current annual salt requirement of the country is produced locally and the remaining 40 % is imported at a cost of nearly Rs.380 million, the government says.
Therefore, with a view to expanding the local salt production, Cabinet has granted its approval to expand the Mannar Saltern at an estimated cost of Rs.25 million.
