Ten percent of the prisoners of Sri Lanka have never attended schools

The Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Development DEW Gunasekara has said that according to a recent survey conducted in prisons, 10 percent of the prisoners of Sri Lanka have never attended schools.


According to the survey, around 70 percent of prisoners possess minimum educational qualifications. The survey covered around 25,000 prisoners.
It has also been found that 50 percent of the prisoners released after the completion of the jail terms return to prison sentenced for other cases.
The minister says that the government has launched a programme to improve this situation positively.
