Sri Lankan Supreme Court to take up bill on proposed constitutional amendments today

The Sri Lankan Supreme Court is to take up the bill on the government's proposed constitutional amendments today.

The bill is to be taken up before a five-member Supreme Court bench to determine if it is consistent with the Constitution.
The local media has reported that a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Shirani Bandaranayake, K. Sripavana, P. A. Ratnayake, S. I. Imam and R. K. Sureshchandra are to examine whether the proposed amendments are in line with Sri Lanka's constitution.
Sri Lanka Cabinet yesterday approved the proposed amendments to the Constitution including the removal of the term limit on Executive Presidency paving the way for President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest for a third term.
The President had referred the bill on the proposed amendments to the Supreme Court and sought a determination following article 123 of the Constitution.
The Bill will be debated in the parliament on September 8.
According to the Constitution, the Supreme Court has to make its determination within a maximum of three days after assembling of the Court, and to communicate its decision only to the President and the Speaker.
