Sri Lanka opposition questions deputy minister's actions in parliament

Condemning the actions of a deputy minister who tied a public official to a tree yesterday (03), Sri Lanka Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe Wednesday called on the government to state its stance on the Minister's behaviour.


Wickremasinghe asked the government to make clear its stance on whether it supports the action of controversial Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva who tied a to a tree for not attending a dengue prevention programme in his electorate.
The Opposition Leader made this statement in Parliament and said Silva had not only violated the Fundamental Rights in the constitution but also several sections in the Penal Code by inflicting intentional harm on a person.
Meanwhile, Silva, told parliament that he did not tie the Samurdhi officer to a tree yesterday. He said the officer had tied himself in order to set an example to others to support the anti-dengue programme.
Silva also read a letter from the Samurdhi officer in the parliament.
