Sri Lanka Cabinet to discuss constitutional reforms today in special session

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has summoned a special Cabinet session today to discuss the proposed constitutional reforms, Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.

All Cabinet ministers have been requested to attend today's special meeting.

Following the Cabinet meeting the draft of the proposed amendments is to be presented to the Supreme Court for its recommendations.

Minister Gunawardena said the draft would be tabled early next month in the parliament and he has already informed government members to cancel all engagements in their respective districts and be present when Parliament meets next.

The proposed amendments seek a third term for the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The government got a boost in power to secure the needed two-third majority for constitutional changes when the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, a constituent partner in the opposition alliance, last week decided to support the government.
