Charges filed in court against Sri Lanka's former army commander on Hicorp deal

The state filed charges at the Colombo High Court today against the former army commander and current parliamentarian General (Retd.) Sarath Fonseka for attempting to deceive the state on an arms deal with the Hicorp (Pvt) Limited.


Colombo High Court judge Sunil Rajapkase fixed the trial for August 30th and allowed the state to proceed with the trial despite the absence of the prime suspect, General Fonseka's son-in-law Danuna Tillakaratne who was the President of the Hicorp Company.
The charge sheet and indictment sheet of the case were filed in the High Court today for the first time.
Fonseka who appeared in the Court today is accused of criminal breach of trust and attempt to receive nearly 300,000 US dollars by defrauding the military.
The Court indicted Danuna Tilakaratne and Wellington Dehoedt, the director of Hicorp (Pvt) Limited along with General Fonseka last month on 21 counts under the Public Property Act.
The main suspect Danuna Tilakaratne remains at large and believed to have fled the country.
