University students in Sri Lanka protest against student's death due to police assault

Students at Sri Lanka's Ruhuna University are currently engaged in a protest against the death of a fellow student last night due to injuries he received following an alleged assault by police officers.

Universities around the island have decided to raise white flags and mark their protest against the death of the university student due to police brutality.
Ruhuna University student Susantha Aruna Bandara had last night succumbed to the injuries he received on June 18. Bandara had spent nearly a month in hospitals receiving treatment for head injuries.
Speaking to web, Inter University Students Federation (USF) Convener, Udul Premaratne said Bandara had suffered severe head injuries when university students were assaulted by the police within the university hostel premises on June 18.
He said the students were assaulted when they had gone to the hostel to collect their belongings before leaving the university premises after the administration decided to close it following a student protest.
"The police continually assault university students and the matter has been raised even with the IGP, but nothing was done. Now a student has died due to injuries suffered from a police assault," Premaratne said.
