A Sri Lankan court today ordered the Prisons Commissioner General in writing to ensure the parliamentary privileges of former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarian General (Retired) Sarath Fonseka, who is currently in military detention.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate had ordered the Prisons Commissioner to ensure General Fonseka's parliamentary privileges and to facilitate his attendance to parliament and advisory meetings.
General Fonseka yesterday raised a privileges issue in parliament and called on Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to summon the Army Commander before the privileges committee of the House for preventing him from attending two parliamentary consultative committee meetings on July 16.
General Fonseka said the Army Commander was responsible for the breach of his parliamentary privileges.
Speaker Rajapaksa assured that he would inquire into the matter.
The legislator is currently being detained pending two military tribunals against him for involving in political activities while in uniform and for allegedly committing fraud in an arms deal that involved his son-in-law.
