The Sri Lankan government is taking measures to develop industries in former battle zones in the country's North to revive the local economy.
Industrial Development Board (IDB) Chairman, Udayasri Kariyawasam Monday (19) visited the Acthuveli industrial zone in Jaffna on an inspection tour with the representatives from private sector and the Board of Investment (BOI).
Kariyawasam told media that the Board is looking for domestic and international investors to establish the industries at this venue.
"There is a 65 acre unutilized land at the industrial estate and our aim is to elevate it to its past glory. We are looking at local and foreign investors to set up industries at this venue," he told local media.
South Asia's largest intimate apparel manufacture, MAS Holdings, a leading apparel company in Sri Lanka has expressed interest to launch an apparel factory in the zone following approval from the Board of Investment (BoI).
The Industrial Revitalization Program commenced under the supervision of the Ministry of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development hopes to empower those abandoned or unmanageable domestic firms in the island.
