Sri Lanka parliament to debate aptness of President and Premier holding cabinet portfolios

Speaker of Sri Lanka parliament Chamal Rajapaksa said today that a private proposal submitted by opposition United National Party MP Ravi Karunanayaka regarding the executive President and Prime Minister could be debated on the next meeting for MP's private proposals.

MP Ravi Karunanayaka mooted a proposal few weeks ago suggesting the President and the Prime Minister should not hold ministerial portfolios. However, it was not debated due to objections of the opposition.
Some government MPs argued that the powers of the executive President cannot be debated in parliament. Later, the Speaker said he would announce his decision regarding the proposal.
The Speaker announced today that the proposal can be debated with amendments. Accordingly, it is to be amended as holding cabinet portfolios is not suitable to the President and the Prime Minister.
