Sri Lanka main opposition launches protest campaign

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party commenced the first of a series of island wide protest campaigns against the government today from Kadawatha, a suburb near capital Colombo.

Addressing the crowd gathered the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said the masses are burdened with rising cost of living and the party will continue the protest until the government brings relief to them.

Wickremasinghe said today the people are abandoned and no relief for them as the prices are rising everyday.

"I told the government to reduce taxes and raise salaries. Until then we will continue the protest," the opposition leader said referring to the meeting he had with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning to discuss the constitutional reforms.
Wickremasinghe said the protest was also to "Take Sarath out and put KP in."
The party will continue the protests to get the detained former military commander and current Democratic National Alliance parliamentarian General (retd.) Sarath Fonseka released and to send away the chief arms procurer for the Tamil Tigers turned government informant KP (Kumaran Pathmanathan).
Speaking of the constitutional reforms, Wickremasinghe said his party will support the government to bring in people friendly amendments to the constitution not a First Family centered constitution that will ruin the country.
Wickremasinghe said he told the President that he alone does not have the power to discuss the constitutional reforms and need to include the party members also in the discussions. He has secured a time with the President for his party on Monday at 5 PM, he said.
However, he said constitutional reforms, even if they are successful will not fill the stomachs of people and his protest campaigns will continue until the government takes measures to ease the burden on the people.
