President inaugurates new Postal Museum in Sri Lanka


Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today declared open a new National Postal Museum and a Philatelic Exhibition Centre at the "Thapel Piyasa" (Postal Headquarters) on D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha in Colombo.

The Museum and the Exhibition Centre have been set up to commemorate the 200 years of postal service in the country, Post Master General M.K.B. Dissanayake said.
Post and Telecommunication Minister, Jeevan Kumaratunga handed over the First Day Cover to President Rajapaksa to mark the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, the President said the new postal museum is a part of a national heritage and it should be protected for the future generations.
Governor of Western Province, Alevi Moulana, Secretary to the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication, Ashoka Jayasekara, Deputy Post master General K A Sherwin and Chairman of National Savings Bank, Pradeep Kariyawasam were also present at the ceremony.
