Jayalalithaa to address protest rally on July 24

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa will address a protest against the DMK government in Tiruchi on July 24.
In a statement here, she said the protest would highlight the failure of the government on various fronts, including its inability to check the rise in prices of essential commodities and prevent illegal sand quarrying.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said farmers in the State were in dire straits because of lack of water and electricity.
“Kurvai cultivation has covered only 53,000 acres and the area is only 14,000 acres in the delta region. The situation has deteriorated to this level because the DMK government is not able to get justice for Tamil Nadu in the Cauvery water dispute.”
Ms. Jayalalithaa said illegal sand quarrying had depleted groundwater level, besides eroding the surface of rivers. Pump sets could not be used for irrigation because there was no power, she said.
