In Sri Lanka, 866 schools short of English teachers

Out of 9,866 schools in Sri Lanka, 866 lack qualified teachers to teach English, says the chief of the Presidential Task Force for English and Information Communication Technology Sunimal Fernando.



Pointing to a recent study by the Presidential Task Force, Mr. Fernando says that 3,468 schools in difficult areas have teacher vacancies for teaching English while 1,196 urban popular schools have excess of English teachers.

Provincially, 231 schools of the North Central Province are short of English teachers while 220 schools in the Northern Province 180 schools in the Eastern Province are short of English teachers.

The schools lacking sufficient number of English teachers are spread in all provinces, said Mr. Sunimal Fernando.
