Sri Lanka's Buddhist monk party Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) says that it supports the constitutional reforms proposed by the government including the removal of the President's term limit.
Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance, of which JHU is a constituent party, plans to bring constitutional amendments that would allow for unlimited presidential terms.
"President Rajapaksa has achieved a lot for the country. If the people want to give him a third term so be it," Minister of Power and Energy and General Secretary of the JHU Patali Champika Ranawaka told reporters today at a press briefing.
The Minister said however, the executive presidential system needs reform and the President must be made accountable to parliament and the judiciary.
The main opposition United National Party (UNP) and Sri Lanka's Marxist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), have already raised objections to the move.
