UN expert panel on Sri Lanka will set standards for a credible investigation

The expert panel, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon plans to appoint will have the role of advising him on what the standards are for a credible domestic investigation or inquiry.

n response to a question on Sri Lanka at the press briefing in UN Headquarters in New York Wednesday, UN Chief's spokesperson Martin Nesirky explained that the UN Chief intends to appoint the panel of experts regardless of the appointment of Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission' by the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Nesirky added, "[the panel] will address the question of accountability that's been discussed very often. So it has the very specific aim to advise the Secretary-General on the extent to which a domestic Sri Lankan inquiry will meet widely held standards for that kind of inquiry."
Sri Lankan government vehemently opposes the UN's move to appoint the advisory panel on the basis that infringes on the country' sovereignty. However, the UN Chief had dismissed the Sri Lankan government's objections.
