Both courts-martial probing into charges of his political involvement while in uniform and contravention of military procurement procedures violations were scheduled for today (05).
General Fonseka has refused to attend the tribunals claiming that he was ill prompting the Army officials to provide a medical specialist and a medical examiner to examine the retired General. The medical officers however, had ruled that he was fit to attend the tribunals.
The Army said the former Army commander appeared before the tribunals after his defence counsels have advised him to attend.
Earlier reports said the detained MP wanted to attend the parliamentary sessions today and he started a hunger strike in protest when he was not allowed to attend the parliament due to the scheduled court-martial proceedings.
The first court-martial, appointed to try the respondent on charges of involvement in politics was convened at 9.30 a.m. and adjourned until 2.00 p.m. on 1st June 2010. The second court-martial was adjourned until 2.00 p.m. on 24th May.
