Tamil Nadu CM assures Nitish of security of Bihari students


Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today assured Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar that his government would take all possible steps to ensure safety and security of students of Bihar studying there.

In a letter to Mr Kumar, Mr Karunanidhi said the Tamil Nadu government would take all possible steps for the safety and security of all students studying in that state, irrespective of the place they were from.

''A student hailing from Jharkhand, studying in second year of Engineering in Annamalai University, Chidambaram, was a victim of a road accident outside the university campus,'' Mr Karunanidhi said, adding the student Gautam was taken to Annamalai University Medical College and then referred to JIPMER Hospital at Puducherry for treatment where he was pronounced dead.

Mr Karunanidhi said about three hundred students got enraged over the incident and began damaging the university property. As the police arrived on the spot the students went helter-skelter and in the melee three (two from Bihar) of them drowned in a nearby pond, he added.

'' A Magisterial inquiry has been ordered,'' Mr Karunanidhi said, adding action would be taken on the basis of the inquiry report.

Earlier, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had made a telephonic call to Mr Karunanidhi, urging him to ensure safety and security of Bihari students studying there in the wake of violence in Annamalai University campus.
