Indian envoy briefed on re-settlement of Tamils in SL

Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha has visited northern Sri Lanka amid efforts by New Delhi to step up re-settlement of Tamil civilians displaced by the ethnic conflict that came to an end in May 2009.


Kantha, who visited Mullaittivu, Vavuniya, Oddusudan and other areas in northern Lanka yesterday, was briefed by officials on the re-settlement process, the ongoing demining operations, and the various reconstruction projects being undertaken in these areas.

Kantha along with Sri Lankan Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare Doughlas Devananda inaugurated a limb refitment camp set up at Menik Farms Zone 1 in Vauniya, according to an Indian High Commission release.

The camp, funded by Government of India, is being implemented by the Jaipur-based Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), a world famous non-governmental organisation better known as the 'Jaipur Foot'.
