Chief Minister M Karunanidhi commended Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran for his initiatives in upbringing the country’s ailing textile sector.
Giving away export awards for 2008-2009 at a function organised by the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL) here on Saturday, the Chief Minister said Dayanidhi Maran, holding the Textile portfolio, had turned around the ailing textile sector within seven months.

‘People were suspicious and even unbelievable when Maran made the announcement of creating one crore new jobs and 7-8 per cent growth rate in a period of five years after being in office’, the Chief Minister said, adding that he was making it a reality now ‘because he is my grand-son.’
Listing out various initiatives taken by Union Minister Maran, the Chief Minister noted the release of Rs 2,546 crore of Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) and discontinuation of five per cent incentive for cotton export to sustain the competitiveness of textile units.
He further lauded Maran’s initiative of setting up of a National Institution of Fashion Technology Centre in Coimbatore and his efforts for upgrading the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Institute of Textile Management into an international textile business school.
On the award ceremony which was conducted in Chennai for the first time, Karunanidhi said it was a matter of pride and distinction for the State.
Commenting about the World Tamil Conference slated to be held in the Textile city Coimbatore in June this year, Karunanidhi said he deemed it a privilege and honour in organising the World Tamil Conference in 2010.
This is the first time the DMK patriarch has made public comments giving a pat to his grand nephew after the patch up between the Maran brothers, Dayanidhi and Kalanidhi and the Karunanidhi family in December 2008, ending their sour relations.
